Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you think of school, you think of learning. But for my students, school is more than just for learning. It is a safe haven and a place where they can escape the harsh realities from home.

My 12 and 13 year-old students are more than young teenagers.

At home, they are caregivers to siblings, and cooks, and they often play an adult role. They come to school to escape the crimes, drugs, and secondary trauma all around them.

Given this, my desire is to create a classroom environment where all students can feel safe, respected, and valued. I know that our school is located in one of the toughest areas. The neighborhoods aren't safe; they are filled with drugs, gangs, and violence.

However, students show up every day ready to learn because they want to change the trajectory of their future. They want to end the generational curse. I want to be there alongside my students, helping them achieve their goals. I want to provide a haven for my students where they can forget about the chaos around them, even if for just a little while. Together, we can remove barriers and help lift our community!

My Project

My student population is very diverse. They come from diverse background and cultures. When they arrive on campus, my students are encouraged to live the Falcon Spirit. This includes celebrating the diversity of our students, their gender identity and sexual orientation included.

When students feel valued and supported, they are more likely to thrive in their communities and in school.

My desire is to create a Celebrate Your Pride event for my LGBTQ+ students and allies. It is important that they are celebrated and shown the same love and respect as any human on campus.

Celebrating Pride brings comfort and safety for my LGBTQ+ students, and it raises awareness of the diversity in ourselves, allows students to normalize LGBTQ families, allows individuals to break any stereotypes or misconceptions, and, most importantly, it instills confidence in the youth on campus.

Through celebration and recognition of Pride, we are creating a school culture that allows all students to focus on learning and not the stresses of feeling like they cannot be their true selves. Inclusion matters for all students, from all backgrounds and cultures.

The requested items will be part of our supplies we distribute during our Pride Month Celebration and GSA Club launch. Students will learn about the different flags and their meanings and learn about gender spectrum and how to use pronouns. Furthermore, we will be discussing our district adopted Gender Action Plan and how they'd be able to access this service.
