My Students

As a teacher in a comprehensive high school, resources are quite limited. Most students come from low-income households and have parents who do not speak English. I also teach in a school district that continuously has its funding cut for various reasons. My students are faced with several challenges both in and outside of the classroom.

Despite the many challenges they face, my students are eager to learn more about themselves and the many cultures that walk the halls of our school.

The diversity of my school spans several continents, cultures, and classes. My students seek opportunities to share and experience each other in ways that are not permitted during instructional time.

These are students that have a different language, clothes, food, music, etc and wish to express them to others, especially the students they spend several hours a day with. And being in an environment where all are excepted brings about a better learning climate for all.

My Project

Because of the diversity of my school, every student wants and does show pride in their heritage. The African American student population recently established a Mentoring Program for seniors to assure they all graduate on time. This program has increased the graduation rate of this population of students and has extended its arms to students outside this particular culture.

The heritage stoles the students will wear during their graduation ceremony will emphasize this accomplishment and hopefully expand to other cultures.

My students have looked forward to the ceremony before graduation in which they receive their stoles from their parents and family members.
