My Students
Welcome to our school! We're a diverse bunch, but what's evident is that we are a community. We are a neighborhood school with about 80% of students walking to or being dropped off at school by a guardian. We are a high poverty school, but these students are motivated to learn and want be engaged in their learning.
Being an inclusive school, our school is full of students with diverse abilities, integrating both general and special education in one room.
These students have differing skills, but one thing they have in common is a love for learning.
These students are energetic and enthusiastic! Unfortunately, many of them are missing basic academic skills in the areas of literacy, math, and writing. This year we are focusing on closing the achievement gap and creating a school full of confident, successful students.
My Project
Reading is fundamental. We've known this all along. Bringing diverse, complex novels to our students is especially important when they are learning from home.
The novels our students read should represent them.
That is why I have created this project for the 3-5 graders at my school. They need the opportunity to read literature that is diverse and represents them and their experience, while also widening their perspective of the world around them.
The book "Amal Unbound" tells the story of a 12 year old Pakistani girl who's life is changed forever. "The Crossover" follows the life experiences of a 12 year old basketball player. "El Deafo" is a graphic novel that depicts its author's childhood experience of growing up deaf. These books will offer diverse perspectives to our diverse population of students.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
