My Students

Our diverse fifth-grade classroom houses learners of all types. Many come from bilingual households, some have learning disabilities, and over half of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches. Some students at my school participate in backpack programs where they receive food to take home for the week. Others are categorized as homeless. Often times, these students experience stresses at home that are beyond what ten-year-olds might be equipped to face. Imagine what an extra challenge it is to focus on academics when you are worrying about these things.

When my students come to class, I want them to enter a safe, welcoming space where they can focus on their learning and create a community with their peers.

What amazes me the most about these ten-year-olds is that despite some of the struggles they face, they are still dedicated to their learning. It is an honor to teach these students every day. I hope to guide each student towards success in their own futures, not only because they are our future, but because they deserve it.

My Project

I am preparing bins to send home with students in December, as we continue our Comprehensive Distance Learning together. I have basic supplies taken care of from my last project but would like to add a couple of fun materials like finger fidgets and watercolors to give our brains a break and tap into our creativity. I haven't been able to do art projects beyond drawing tutorials, since not all my students have other supplies (like paints). We will be able to expand our skills with these new items!

These supplies are sure to excite students as Covid numbers rise, and the prospect of returning to school any time soon is looking bleaker.

The flashlights and digital scale will be important for our classroom upon our inevitable return (whether this happens soon, or months down the road). We need a scale to measure the weight of materials during our matter unit in science. The flashlights will serve dual purposes; they will be perfect for inquiry projects about star brightness, and will also make great reading companions (along with the battery operated tealights) during "lights off" read-in days for extra fun! As always, I have included a diverse collection of books in this project to represent my students. You will find books about gender fluidity, kids who have transitioned, pronouns, race issues, women overcoming barriers, and more!
