Imagine this...eight emergent readers listening carefully as they read along with a book on CD. On the other side of the room 8 children who are reading at level have just finished listening and reading along to a more difficult book and they are getting ready to write and/or draw a response to their reading. In the back of the room eight struggling readers work intensely with me, their classroom teacher, on letter sounds so they too can learn to read as their peers do. I am a first grade teacher that loves everything about my job. I teach at a wonderful school in the South Loop area where our philosophy is to provide an excellent education to children of all levels and abilities. A CD Listening Center will enable children of all reading levels to enhance the skills they already know and to improve the ones they don't. Ideally I would love to have 2 CD Centers in my classroom. This would allow me to work with a small group without any interruptions or distractions. I would use the centers daily as I like to alternate working with small groups. Each center can accommodate 8 children. Currently I have children reading at grade level, above grade level, and below grade level so 2 CD players would allow me to focus all of my attention on 1 group at a time. These centers truly benefit the entire class as they allow me time to work with each group as the other children are listening and reading to a book on CD. It is a center that all children love and learn from. It is also a great tool for children who finish other work early, as it prevents them from wasting time or distracting those children still working. Lastly, because the centers are mobile they can be used in any classroom in the school, allowing hundreds of children to benefit from them!
