As a middle school special education teacher, I work with students with a wide range of academic, social, and behavior skills and abilities. My school, located in Cambridge, MA, serves students in grades 6-12. As a special education teacher there, I push into inclusion classes to ensure that students on IEPs are receiving the appropriate accommodations, modifications, and instruction needed in order to succeed in the general education classroom.
By nature of their disabilities, many of the students I work with find it challenging to keep track of their materials.
In order for my students to be successful in each of their classes, they need the appropriate supplies and materials to complete each assignment! Additionally, this year my students will be introduced to more challenging text then years prior. My goal is to utilize our guided reading sessions as an anchor for their special education resource room and their English classroom.
Each year, I begin my learning lab (a special education only resource room) by explaining the importance of reading and fostering a love for reading. Inspiring my students to become active and involved in their reading takes time, dedication, and just the right reading resources. This year, I will have eight new students with a variety of abilities, needs, and interests. It is important to address a wide area of not only their English curriculum in this critical small group time but also their social and emotional well being. This year, my students will continue to grow during one of the hardest social developmental stages- adolescence. As I grow and adapt to this new social-emotional curriculum to meet their growing needs, I require new books to keep students interested and inspired.
