My Students

Were you ever bored by the books you read in school? Did you ever feel like you couldn't create connections between the books you read and your own life? Our English class needs engaging books to study. Help us by donating towards a class set of the novel "The Outsiders".

We are a charter school located in California.

Our class of 8th graders is primarily Hispanic, and many of them have not had much exposure to the English language outside of visual entertainment. Many of them do not have models of sustained academic success in their families. The majority do not have the reading skills appropriate for their grade. They have the same typical desires as most young adolescents, but they often do not have high career expectations for themselves. Our school was built to support and prepare these students for a college education.

My Project

My students need 35 copies of "The Outsiders" to read. The 8th grade students need high-interest books to engage them on a personal level. Since this book is at their reading level, it will help the students develop reading skills. The students will be able to examine the theme of isolation and the effects of society and class upon the choices of adolescents. They will be able to create connections between these themes and their own backgrounds. They will also be able to examine their culture to see if the themes and experiences illustrated in the book are still present and applicable. Their analysis and critical thinking will be demonstrated in persuasive essays and presentation projects.

Our school does not have a large budget to provide new books for the students each year.

These 8th Grade students have a limited library of class texts to choose from, and they do not have many opportunities to read engaging texts at their level. Your donation will help them study an interesting book that will help give them create connections to their own lives.
