Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This is a school-wide project request that will help to motivate and encourage all of the students at Wilson Middle School. After returning from the pandemic I noticed that many of our students were struggling with in-person communication. My colleagues and I recognized that our students had difficulty expressing themselves to others, forming and maintaining friendships and using appropriate manners.

These observations and concerns lead to the formation of "Caught Being Kind", which is an incentive program focused on highlighting healthy student behaviors.

Each month a new trait is chosen to be taught. Our counseling team delivers mini-lessons through the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) program and then we pass out paper 'tiger tickets' to students who express that skill or trait.

Along with receiving recognition for being kind or respectful, etc., our students also receive a tangible reward such as snacks, books or school supplies.

As a site we have witnessed this character education improve the mental health and interpersonal skills of our students. They are bonding more and creating stronger relationships with their peers and among staff members. Through the funding of this request, I hope to have many more incentives to meet the needs of our school and reach more students.
