My Students

I teach a self-contained special education classroom where students have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. All of my students are identified with Autism or a developmental disability, but that does not prevent them from doing their best. I am fortunate enough to have great parental support from my students' families despite their daily struggles. Families look different for our students. We experience students in foster homes, raised by grandparents. parents in prison, homelessness and single parent and 2 parent families.

We are a Leader In Me School where everyone can be a leader.

Everyone has genius, and we develop the whole child by building relationships and empowering students.

My students are in grades kindergarten through 2nd and spend many years with me, so I really get to know what they need to perform their best learning. We also partner with other classes in our school. We use a modified curriculum that teaches grade-level content at their level of understanding.

My Project

My students have some behaviors that others might consider "challenging" especially in a school setting where they are expected to sit and listen to learn for much of their day. It's even more of a challenge to follow those expectations when you have ADHD, Autism and learning disability and you struggle to control your body and impulsive behavior as you try to learn very hard concepts.

My school uses classroom dojo to reward positive behaviors and I give my students a small prize at the end of the day when they have earned enough points.

We restart fresh with 0 each day so students can make better choices each day. Most of my students understand this concept but it is still a little abstract for some.

If we passed out "Caught Being Good" Coins each time they earned a dojo point, the students can practice financial literacy skills of counting, understanding more and less and even budgeting and saving for a larger prize. Students would have the option of turning in their coins at the end of the day to buy a regular prize, or save them for something worth more, delaying the prize for something bigger and better. Having tangible coins will help use learn math skills, saving and spending wisely.
