Caterpillars and Seeds: Project-Based Unit About Growth and Change

My students need a butterfly kit and caterpillars for a project-based learning unit about growth---physical growth and symbolic growth. We are also going to plant seeds around the school grounds to beautify our environment.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are enthusiastic and diligent. They are caring and thoughtful. We have read several books this year about inclusion and kindness, and we have all gained insight into the importance of treating others the way we would want to be treated. They are eager to learn and enjoy learning through project-based activities.

A group of eight of my students represent the class as a student council and meet each Friday to discuss what we can do in our classroom, in our school, and in our community to make a positive impact.

We are in a community that is low-income and families struggle with lack of resources. Though, whenever we have a lesson on what we could do to make the world a better place, my students focus on the world outside their own daily struggles. The joy they exhibit when helping is admirable.

My Project

The excitement my students will have when the caterpillars and seeds arrive will be amazing! Watching the growth and seeing the process of metamorphosis is a lesson that can best be taught first-hand.

Responsibility and respect are a huge part of this unit because in order for the growth to happen, my students will have to follow instructions and make sure all the proper steps are taken to care for our live animals and plants.

We will share in the responsibility of the jobs that need to be done to grow our seeds (watering...) and protect our caterpillars/butterflies until we can release them and watch them fly away. :)
