My Students

My students learn every hit song within a week's time! Using music in class has many benefits, like promoting a relaxed emotional state, stimulating the brain to be creative, & aiding in memory formation. Let's go farther & integrate technology, by using a karaoke machine to build reading fluency.

My students face so many challenges, but they realize that education is the vehicle to drive them towards a more promising future.

With so many issues, it is my mission as their educator to take them away and rescue them from their pressing worries through the joys of meaningful experiences and exposure to what life has to offer. Our school is 100% poverty stricken; with only one other in the state of South Carolina. We don't take this rank as an excuse to have a pity party, but rather as a means of motivation. We strive to plant seeds of hope and reassure the students that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success. By understanding that there is more to life than what meets the eye, it is my belief that my students will do what it takes to beat the odds, defy the statistics and embrace the world of education and all it has to offer.

My Project

For this C2i project, I am requesting a karaoke machine & karaoke song disks to assist my students in practicing reading fluency in a more relaxed environment. Song lyrics & music are the perfect reading fluency exercise, because music enforces the speed at which the words must be read. Students are successful simply by reading in time to the music. Not only would this activity help to improve their final words per minute scores on their reading fluency tests, but it would also be fun! While using the karaoke machine to build reading fluency, we will also record the 'lesson' using our recently funded HP camcorder and create musical videos! The musical videos will then be used as a study guide to review songs that contain curriculum content. Additionally, the musical videos can be shared on our class website & even used to promote new book selections for other students in our school on the morning news show. The learning possibilities are endless and we intend to explore all options!

My wish for my students is that they will feel successful at a skill that has previously been a 'confidence killer' for many of them.

So many of them have musical intelligence and I know that this C2i project will influence their linguistic intelligence by build their reading fluency. Your donation will help us to achieve this goal. Thank you in advance for considering this request and helping us to 'Catch the Rhythm of Reading with Hit Music'!
