My Students

Imagine what it must be like moving to a new country. Everything is new and you can't even read the signs. You may have learned how to read and write in your own language, or maybe school was intermittent for you. Regardless, walking into a classroom where everything you see and hear is in a foreign language, would be challenging, to say the least.

Every day, my students teach me what it means to be resilient and persistent.

I love teaching this group! My students are from many different places. This year I have students from Yemen, Egypt, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Honduras, Mexico, El Salvador, Vietnam, Egypt, Columbia, Guatemala, China, and the Philippines. Many of my students come from places that do not share our alphabet. They have a steep learning curve in both academic and social/cultural skills. Nevertheless, it is amazing how quickly they progress in all areas and go on to have successful high school and college experiences. I am constantly trying to find activities that are interesting and engaging to help them learn the basics of English.

My Project

I am always looking for ways to motivate and engage my English Learners. The class that will read Holes is n 8th grade class made up of students whose home language is not English. Some of the students were born here and are behind in reading and writing for a variety of reasons and some are fairly new to the United States. They are all reading between 2-4 years below grade level in English. I recently re-read The Old Man and the Sea and it's such a fun story! It is written in fairly simple language but with so much depth of meaning and I really think my students will benefit from reading it.

A book like The Old Man and the Sea is a great way to give students an engaging story at an accessible literacy level.

We will read it together and do activities to support and enhance reading comprehension and vocabulary. We will also have class discussions and writing projects to enable learning in academic discourse both written and verbal.

I am looking forward to experiencing this story with my students! Thank you for reading about my students and for any help you can give funding this project!!
