This upcoming school year will be different than any other. My students are headed back to school amidst the uncertainty and fear of Covid 19. They ended the previous school year trying their best to learn at home.
My students are brave and excited to learn back inside the classroom.
They are also ready to tackle issues of diversity and come together to learn and appreciate each others' differences. My classroom has English language learners that have recently immigrated to America from Guatemala. There are also a couple students that need special accommodations to be successful learners.
The theorist, Lev Vygotsky, believed that children need social interaction to make connections to be successful learners. My students are going to follow guidelines set by our school district to socially interact safely.
My Project
In order for my students to come back into the classroom they need to wear masks to prevent the spread of germs. As the teacher I will also be wearing a mask. Wearing masks makes it difficult to hear what is being said. The school provides a microphone for my use, but my students need to hear what their classmates are saying.
As students listen to each other cloudy concepts and strategies become clear.
English language learners they need to hear the social and academic language from not only the teacher but from their peers as well. Not to mention they get to throw the microphone!
This new and entertaining way to participate in the classroom will encourage students to stay engaged in class discussions. In order to protect students from germs the Qball can be sanitized before being thrown to a different person.
