My students need supplies for their aquarium, to provide a habitat for the California Rainbow Trout they will be hatching and raising, with the help of the program Trout in the Classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have thirty-one creative students in my fifth grade class. They are faced with many challenges, but they are so excited to learn and expand their thinking.
Our students come from a low income community, with 100% free lunch and breakfast at our site.
Students are able to come to a safe environment, at school, where they know they will be fed and not go hungry. Our community also has a language barrier, and the majority of our students are English learners. We also have a large community of migrant workers, where families are forced to move according to where jobs are available.
Though students are faced with these problems, they are so willing to learn. They are so motivated and excited about new projects.
My Project
Our classroom will be participating in the program trout in the Classroom. We will be hatching and raising trout in an aquarium set. We will be working across grade levels within our school, from first grade to fifth grade.
My class will be doing a STEAM project, raising trout from eggs to fry, and releasing them into a local body of water on a field trip!
We will be learning about the life cycle of trout, including their diet, habitat, adaptations and needs. Students will observe and record data, think about the migration of the fish, engineer solutions that solve problems that hinder their migration, write about trout, and create art projects involving trout and their habitat. After raising and studying the trout for 8 weeks, we will take a field trip to release our trout into the wild.
Having a tank in our classroom, where students can watch the hatching and development of the fish, will spark curiosity and engage students in their learning.
