This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students from my school live in one of the highest inner-city poverty areas in not just New York City, but in the entire nation. Many of our students are new English language learners who survive day-to-day and view coming to this public school as a positive way to escape their otherwise less than satisfactory lives. Others don't even have homes to go to!
We try our best.
We provide students with access to after-school programs, necessary technology, even basic ADL materials, but with major budget cuts, we can no longer afford to fund many student-centered projects and sometimes the latest technology is up to teachers to explore and provide.
My Project
Sixth grade is filled with experiences in playing with numbers. In the sixth grade, students are apt or becoming apt at operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. What we now want them doing is seeing how to factor out a number, explore common denominators, and visualize proportions and ratios.
Calculators give students in the sixth grade the confidence to begin playing with numbers that helps us teach them to see patterns that they wouldn't otherwise be able to see.
Many students are experiencing trouble from home issues or from having moved around a lot, sometimes through different countries. Many have difficulty with some of the basics and most lack confidence in their findings. Getting the students to "play" is the best way I know to guide them through these troubles.
