Cases For Our Basses (and Some New Strings)

My students need new cases for our basses so that they can take them home to practice. This one is great because it has wheels! We are also replacing worn out strings on our school violins.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school is a Title I high school in El Paso, Texas with students from diverse backgrounds. Orchestra kids are truly some of the best kids on campus. A high percentage of them take advanced academic courses like AP and IB. Many of them are also involved in other fine arts courses, like Mariachi, Marching Band, Guitar, Art, and Theatre. Those who aren't busy with other fine arts courses are participating in school athletic and academic teams. Still, our varsity group willingly comes to school more than an hour early every day to fit orchestra into their schedule during zero period. They're busy, but they're dedicated and loyal. Many of our students rank among the top high school players in the city and participate in our city's youth symphony program.

My Project

Many of the cases for our basses are worn out. The zippers don’t work, or they have holes in them. Unfortunately, they’re also very expensive! I would like to be able to protect our instruments when we travel off campus, and allow my students to more easily transport their instruments home for practice. This case is great because it has wheels! Hopefully this will be the first of many. Our orchestra currently has five bassists and only three cases that will completely zip. We’ve been lucky this year that not all of our bass players have needed to take their instruments off campus at the same time!

We are also replacing old, worn out strings (that won’t hold pitch) with new sets on some school violins, and some spare rosin to keep in the classroom for students to use when they don’t have any.
