Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Intermediate Art students at Calistoga High are ready to dive into printmaking. This proposed lesson studies the similarities and differences between Japanese woodblock prints and European Impressionist paintings. The students will learn about worldly influences on art and then study the techniques used in printmaking. Each student will create a print of their own and then use that print to create both cards and prints. This unit is designed to include lessons in history and visual literacy. As a class we will study the geography of Japan and the changes that took place around the world as Japan opened its borders. I have worked with the Humanities department to do this unit with my students as they are studying Asia in their Humanities class. There will be 20 students participating in this project. The materials we need will be bench hooks, ink plates, printing paint, carving tools, linoleum blocks and paper. This lesson is important for the students because it will expose them to the influences of Japanese art in Europe. It will also allow the students to learn the process of printmaking.
