Save our sanity :) As our class size is increasing, we need more than ever to create a caring, close community among the students. For years we needed 20 carpet spots, but now we're growing, growing, growing, and it is a challenge to choose who sits on the sidelines each day!
Our class is a multi-age group of 22 second and third graders.
They do their best work in varied groupings - sometimes as a whole class, sometimes in pairs, and sometimes in small groups. The carpet we need will help with ALL of these! They need their own space when sitting whole-group. This carpet has 30 spaces, which will work even if we continue to increase our class size (hope not, but you never know!). Working in pairs, the students will have a cheerful, comfy place to work when they want to spread out on the floor. I also have special education kids in class, some of whom are encouraged to lay on the floor to do all reading/writing work. Having a real carpet will be so much easier on their bodies!
My Project
When I read aloud, the children need to find a spot to sit on the rug. With the new rug we're asking for, they would sit on their own color block. No more rush to get a spot on the carpet - there's plenty of room for everyone! No more "she's touching me" space concerns. Just soft, roomy squares for every student. When they sit in a circle, the new rug will be big enough to accommodate each child - no one is left on the sidelines. When working in pairs or alone, students will be more likely to concentrate on their work if they are comfortable. In addition, this rug is just beautiful and so colorful, it will cheer up the classroom every day.
We all know that children need individual attention and care.
Small signs like running out of squares on a small carpet give children the message that there is not enough for them. If a simple rug can give the impression of abundant space, maybe that will help the children know they are safe and will get what they need. I love my school because we value the child's academic, emotional, social and physical growth equally. I would like to create a classroom space that shares that message.
