I work in a Title I school, with 100% free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. My students range from ages 6-7 in a low income, military area.
My students are wonderful, they are hard-working, very intelligent, and sweet children, some homeless, and parents who are deployed.
They love hands-on activities, and to be up and about learning in stations and on projects. Our school is in a very busy military town close to several bases. Our school has a very diverse population with students who all learn in different ways. Our school's goal is to give every student the opportunity and tools to be successful in all that they do.
We start every day and every lesson as a whole group on the carpet. This is the time when my students get to really sit together as a group to learn new topics, think-pair-share ideas and strategies, share their creations and writing, and have our morning meeting. The rug we currently have is small and my students aren't all able to fit on it. This rug will also help with teaching seasons, days of the week, and reminder for the alphabet and letter sounds. A bigger new rug would help generate a more welcoming and happy classroom environment for my students to enjoy.
