I have been a kindergarten teacher in Chicago\'s Cabrini Green neighborhood for 15 years. Almost all of my students live in extreme poverty. For many of my students, our classroom is one of the few places that always feel safe and orderly. I have worked hard over the years to create a strong sense of community in our classroom. One of the ways I have done this is by setting up a morning story time routine. Morning story time is the first thing we do daily. To start the morning story time, I turn on the song \"What a Wonderful World\". While the song is playing the students know to cleanup what they are doing and come to the carpet for our morning story time. This has been a very important way to strengthen our classroom order and community. Right now our carpet is tattered and spotted and has been in our classroom for 8 years. It is starting to come apart and has had many little shoes on it and cannot come clean anymore. In addition to morning story time, the rug serves as a place for playtime, games to learn letter sounds and other learning experiences throughout the day. Our classroom would be complete if we had a warm, welcoming classroom rug to sit and learn on.
