This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse, first grade, integrated, collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although most students come from low-income homes or homes with limited parental school involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day, ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My class of first graders is some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
We are back in person after a year of remote learning. There are some new and very strict guidelines that include rules such as "no shared carpets", "no sharing supplies", and "keep kids 6 feet apart". Although these guidelines are necessary, they are very hard to follow in 1st grade.
We need a few tools to help us comply with with the CDC guidelines and keep us healthy.I am asking for carpet squares so kids with not have to sit on the cold, dirty, and hard floor.
The carpet squares will also allow each child to have a comfortable space to themselves. These squares are expensive so I assure you they will still be useful for us even after pandemic. I am also asking for crayon holds and large supply bags for the students. These will keep germ sharing to a minimum and will be a 6 year old friendly way to contain each students school supplies and tools. The pink tape will be used to mark where the children should put their carpet square down on the floor so I can control their social distancing.
We are also requesting finger lights to help students learn to track as they read with their finger. This is a great way to get them excited about reading and also normalize using their fingers as they read.
