This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"For a child, it is in the simplicity of play that the complexity of life is sorted like puzzle pieces joined together to make sense of the world." –L.R Knost
When children are young, they learn much about life through their play, and that is what I want for them as they engage in my PE class.
My students are Kindergarteners.
These children are considered high-risk children because of their socio economic status and their ethnicity.
These children are brilliant young minds (5 year old minds) who enjoy learning through exploration, play, and hands on activities, which is exactly what my physical education class provides for them.
My school is a place, which is highly focused on academics, but also works with our students to learn to love one another, to never give up, to always be honest, and to learn from their mistakes. My school is a place in which children are encouraged to take risks in a safe and nurturing environment in which they will be able to learn and thrive. My school is a place in which we believe that all children can and will learn and we do whatever it takes to make sure that they do.
My Project
My students will use these individual mats in many ways. Students will be able to sit comfortably as they perform warm up and cool down exercises at the start and end of our PE class. My students will be able to quickly put these carpet mats together to work in pairs or groups. These carpet mats will also serve for the purpose of grouping students to work on various activities according to color. My students will learn the concept of personal space, as they are asked to stay in their own carpet mat.
I envision my physical education classroom to be a place in which my students can learn and play while being comfortable. I see it as a place in which my students learn to be aware of themselves and their personal space, as well as learn to work with others in order to build a sense of self and community through various interactions.
These carpet mats will change the lives of my students for the better because they will allow my students to continue learning through exploration and through play, and for a child; there really is nothing better than this.
