All of my students are wonderful, quirky individuals. They find common bonds, make each other laugh, and push each other to think.
In our small, diverse urban school, everyone knows everyone and we thrive on diversity.
Students speak multiple languages at home and come from five continents. This enriches our study of world history and our community as a whole. However, with the small family feel, students also hold each other accountable. They may fight like siblings, but they support and accept each other, too.
Over 60% of students in our school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. They come from neighborhoods from all around San Francisco, and when they meet at school, they are genuinely happy to be there.
My Project
Students need a warm, welcoming space to feel ready to learn. Our school is built into a hillside, and all classrooms on our side of the building have no windows. After a campus remodel, our new classroom has fluorescent lighting and a polished concrete floor, giving the space a cold, industrial feel. Students expressed they would prefer carpeting to cover the floor.
Carpet tiles will provide a warm, welcoming feel to the classroom.
Rather than the institutional polished concrete, students will feel more comfortable in a room with carpet. Students will feel ownership of the space by working together to plan the carpet layout and lay the tiles and by keeping the carpet clean with the cordless stick vacuum we are also requesting.
Half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
