I have a classroom brimful of 11-13 year-olds and it is my mission to turn them on to reading. I will stop at nothing to help my students discover their inner love for reading.
I teach at an incredibly diverse school full of students at varying reading levels.
I teach in a Reading Workshop format where students choose books that interest them that are at their independent reading levels. Part of the reason teens are sometimes turned off to reading is because they are forced to read something they have no interest in and that may or may not be at their independent reading level. I try to foster the love of reading in my classroom by showing students that reading is enjoyable. If teens find reading enjoyable, they are more likely to do it, and the more they read, the better they get at it!
I try to make my classroom resemble the reading environment that I myself find most conducive to reading. It should not only have lots and lots of books to choose from, but it should also be comfortable! My classroom library has couches, chairs, and pillows for kids to cozy up on with their books. The problem is, the carpet in our reading area has seen better days. With hundreds of kids using it every day, it is in great need of replacement. A new carpet in our reading area will make the reading experience that much more enjoyable!
The class gathers on the carpet for lessons and read aloud every single day, and it is definitely the most treasured area of our classroom.
A new carpet will make the reading area that much more conducive to learning and reading.
