Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade students attend a high poverty school, they come from a low-social economic status. Over 90% of the students at our school receive free or reduced lunch, which in my classroom most of them are starving two hours before lunch time. It's crucial for them to have a snack otherwise they can't learn what I'm teaching.

After teaching third grade for almost ten years, I've realized how important it is for my students to be able to wiggle in their chairs.

We build a community in which we care and respect each other's learning. Sometimes that might mean that my wiggly students quietly stand up or they might go sit on the floor, but sometimes it causes a distraction for others. My students tend to always want to share their knowledge and help each other out, it is one of my favorite qualities about them.

My Project

My students are in need of these materials in order to stay focused while I'm teaching. In my classroom we do not have a sink to wash our hands, which means any time I send a student out to go wash their hands in the restroom that is five valuable minutes wasted. Due to hand sanitizer our classroom would improve in saving learning time. My kiddos tend to get sick all the time, which means hand sanitizer would help along with tissues.

Our classroom is in need of some bouncy bands to keep some students from disrupting each other's learning.

Every year there is always a handful of students who need sensory items to keep them focused, some items may cause a disruption. As an educator I've tried: play dough, Velcro, rubber bands, squeeze balls, providing optional seating, pillows, glitter jars, reward charts, plush toys and other strategies to help my students stay focus.

My students are also in need of some healthy snacks to eat in between breakfast and lunch, which consist of almost a five hour time frame. Sometimes I have students starving, we do provide breakfast, but at times they come late and miss it. On Mondays some students are more hungry than others due to not having much to eat on the weekends. With a little snack we can help my students focus on learning rather than thinking about what's for lunch, a child should never go hungry or have to worry about what they are eating next.
