Caring for Those in Our Community Experiencing Homelessness
My students need hygiene products, snacks, hand warmers, first aid kits, and other personal care items to make care packages for those in our community experiencing homelessness.
Our district is one of the most diverse in the nation. Our students come from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds, speak multiple languages, and perform on a wide range of academic abilities. It is amazing to educate children who are so different from one another. They have some of the most fun and vibrant personalities, and I am excited every day I am able to work with them. I have never met more hard-working students!
With all of the demands we put on our young students, they deserve a chance to learn through hands-on activities, in a fun and engaging environment.
Many of our students have been affected by homelessness, whether they themselves have been homeless at one point in their lives, a family member, or people in the community. They are aware of difficult circumstances and living situations people are going through, and I want to give them a way to make a difference.
I am so excited to start this school year and bring new opportunities to my students. I can't wait to inspire them to become more motivated learners and kinder citizens.
My Project
Making care packages for those in our city experiencing homelessness is a great community building activity for our classroom. I want to help my students build a school family while teaching them it is important to care for others. Working together to put the personal care items in the bags, and making notes to go along with them, is an opportunity for my students to bond.
By making these care packages, I hope to inspire my young students to think of others, learn to make a difference, and provide them a way to improve the lives of others.
For those experiencing homelessness, knowing that someone cares about them and is providing them with the essentials they need is very important. Snacks, shampoo, soap, first aid kits, hand warmers, toothbrushes, and toothpaste are some of the items we plan on putting in the bags. We will deliver them (along with any extra materials) to the local shelters for them to pass out to their clients. I am excited to present my students with the opportunity to help those in need. Thank you for allowing us be the bright spot in someone's day who may be experiencing homelessness in our community.
