Help me give my students a sensory room that will provide them with the input they need to calm and focus themselves to be better prepared for learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school has a population of over 770 students, 100% of which receive free breakfast, lunch, and a snack before they go home each day. Amongst those students are over 50 children with exceptionalities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disabilities and other health impairments. Although we are located in the vacation capital of the world, the majority of our students face poverty that many people can’t imagine or will ever experience. Our students have faced violence in their community, trauma, hunger, and even homelessness.

Our school is a place of refuge for our students, and we feel privileged to welcome them through our doors each day. The combination of their exceptionalities and experiences can make coping with the school environment very difficult. We know that the opportunity to experience a sensory room would be highly beneficial for the academic and behavioral growth of our students.
My Project

A sensory room is a designated area within a school where a student may receive or exclude sensory input and work on self-regulating behavior.
Sensory rooms contain equipment that assists students with focusing on the present moment so that they can better process sensory information. These items might include special lighting, seating, calming sounds and fidget toys that target different senses, and help students regroup and focus on their communication skills, rather than any outside stressors.
The sensory room we are hoping to create at our elementary school will help our students build skills that will promote self-organization and positive change. Our students mean the world to us, and we thoroughly appreciate your consideration of this project!
