Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are curious, capable, and full of potential. Many are also neurodivergent and working hard to learn how to care for themselves, their classroom, and their peers.

This project will help them grow their capacity for compassion by learning to recognize the needs of others — and take action in small, meaningful ways to help.

With items like compostable baby wipes and eco-friendly cleaner, students will learn how to care for shared spaces and meet the hygiene needs of classmates who struggle with toileting, spills, or sensory issues. These tools make it possible for students to notice when someone needs help — and offer support in real time, such as handing a wipe to a friend or cleaning a desk for someone who's upset.

The chart paper will help us build visual anchor charts, behavior prompts, and “kindness checklists” created by students themselves. These reminders will guide them to treat others with empathy, even during challenging social moments.

The whisper phones support reading fluency, but more importantly, they give students a way to hear and connect with the emotions in a story — which helps them relate to others' experiences. As students build fluency and understanding, they begin to see the world through a broader lens.

We’ll measure success not only through academic data, but, through observed, compassionate behaviors. I’ll track moments when students ask “Do you need help?”, respectfully give space to others, use kind words during conflict, or initiate caring actions like offering tissues or calming a classmate.

With your support, students will grow in their ability to recognize suffering, take thoughtful action, and build a classroom culture rooted in empathy and care.
