Not only did they stay focused the entire time (a BIG win for our group!), but they also worked together so respectfully—helping each other with rules and celebrating wins as a team. One of my students, who rarely participates in group work, said, \"Can we do this EVERY day?\"\r\n\r\nWhen they first saw the games, their excitement was off the charts! Many of my kids have big imaginations but often struggle to express their ideas in traditional ways. Having access to materials that let them design, illustrate, and create their very own books has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for them. We started by using the sets during a writing lesson where students brainstormed a simple story idea—something as small as a favorite memory, a pet they love, or a pretend adventure they dreamed up. With the blank booklets, markers, crayons, and stickers, my students were able to bring those ideas to life. One student wrote about a superhero version of himself saving the school, while another created a book about her dog and all the funny things he does. Watching them see their stories take shape on the pages, in their own handwriting and with their own drawings, was incredibly powerful. It gave them ownership of their learning in a way that worksheets and typical writing assignments simply can't match.\r\n\r\nThe moment my students first saw the illustration box sets was unforgettable. Their eyes widened when I pulled out the blank books, and several of them immediately began asking, \"Do we really get to make our own book?\" The excitement was contagious, and even some of my more reluctant writers—students who usually hesitate to put pencil to paper—jumped right in. The supplies turned writing into something fun, tangible, and personal. For children who often feel discouraged by their challenges, having the chance to create something real and beautiful gave them a sense of pride. One student hugged his finished booklet and said, \"I can't wait to show my mom that I'm an author.\" That moment alone was worth everything, because it showed how these resources didn't just support academics—they built confidence and joy.\r\n\r\nNow that my students have had a chance to experiment with making their first books, the next step is to take these projects further. We plan to start a \"classroom library\" where each student's finished books will be displayed so their peers can check them out and read them. This will give the students the experience of being both authors and readers, learning to respect and appreciate one another's work. We also plan to connect these projects to our lessons in reading and social studies by having students create informational books about topics we are studying, like important figures in history or facts about animals and habitats. The beauty of the illustration box sets is that they are versatile—they can be used to tell personal stories, create imaginative adventures, or even show what students have learned in class in a more creative and meaningful way.\r\n\r\nI am so thankful for your generosity in making this project possible. These resources are not just art supplies—they are tools that empower my students to see themselves as storytellers and creators. For children with unique learning needs, having the ability to make something tangible that represents their voice is incredibly empowering. The pride they feel when they hold up their finished books is priceless. You've given them a gift that will continue to inspire creativity, boost confidence, and make learning more meaningful throughout the year. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping my students discover the joy of writing and illustrating their own stories.","fullyFundedDate":1754065090824,"projectUrl":"project/ill-tell-my-story-illustrated-book-kit/9468112/","projectTitle":"I'll Tell My Story: Illustrated Book Kits for Compassionate Expression","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rubino","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3737944_orig.jpg?crop=720,720,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1628352150765","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3737944"},{"teacherId":3737944,"projectId":9267430,"letterContent":"At the beginning of the school year, having the right supplies sets the tone for everything we do, and thanks to your generosity, my students and I have been able to start the year strong. The basic supplies we received—pencils, markers, notebooks, paper, folders, and other essentials—are items many people might take for granted, but in my classroom, they are the foundation that keeps everything running smoothly. Because I work with students who have autism and other learning differences, having reliable supplies means I can adapt lessons quickly and make sure every child has exactly what they need in front of them. For example, one of our first classroom projects was a \"getting to know you\" activity. Each student decorated a personal folder using markers, stickers, and colored pencils. These folders now hold their classwork and are personalized to represent who they are. The pride they felt in creating something that was uniquely theirs was so special to watch, and it never would have been possible without these supplies. The project not only gave us a fun and creative start to the year but also helped my students practice responsibility by caring for and using their materials each day.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new supplies, their excitement was obvious. Some of them gasped when they saw the fresh boxes of crayons and markers, while others immediately reached for the bright notebooks and folders, eager to claim one in their favorite color. For many of my students, having brand-new supplies of their own is a rare treat, and you could see their sense of ownership right away. One student held up his new pencil box and said, \"This is mine?\" with the biggest smile on his face. Another carefully lined up all of her new markers in a rainbow pattern and didn't want to put them down. These little moments may seem simple, but they are incredibly meaningful in building classroom community and giving students a sense of belonging. Having their own materials eliminates the stress of not being prepared, which allows them to focus fully on learning.\r\n\r\nNow that we are settled into our routines, the next steps for my students involve putting these supplies to work in bigger projects and lessons. In reading, we are using notebooks to practice writing summaries and drawing pictures that go along with our stories. In math, students are using rulers, pencils, and graph paper to create charts and practice measuring. Soon, we will be starting a social studies project where students will create posters about colonial life, and thanks to the supplies, they will have everything they need to write, color, and present their ideas in a creative and engaging way. Having access to basic materials means I can plan lessons that are interactive and hands-on without worrying about whether we'll have enough supplies to go around.\r\n\r\nI am deeply thankful for your support. These supplies have not only provided my students with the tools they need to succeed but have also given them a sense of pride and excitement about coming to class each day. The difference may look small on the surface—pencils, paper, markers—but in reality, it means that every child in my room is equipped, confident, and ready to learn. Your generosity has helped us start the school year on the right foot, and I know these materials will continue to make a lasting impact as we move forward with new projects and lessons. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for giving my students the chance to begin this school year with everything they need to grow and thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1746698770360,"projectUrl":"project/ready-to-launch-setting-up-for-a-succes/9267430/","projectTitle":"Ready to Launch: Setting Up for a Successful School Year!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rubino","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3737944_orig.jpg?crop=720,720,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1628352150765","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3737944"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_66471","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":445,"numTeachers":56,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":43,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":33,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"7.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.7,"schoolId":66471,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about McMullen - Booth Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"McMullen - Booth Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/pinellas-county-schools/mcmullen-booth-elementary-school/66471"}
