Caring About the Environment: Part 3

Help me give my students Inquiries in Science (Saving Soils Multi-Class equipment sets and refill kits, Tracking Endangered Species, and Understanding Climate Change kits), and supplies to use the kits.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Reed's classroom raised $1,497

My Project

At first glance, these science kits are about students learning the content. With the Saving Soils kit, students develop the skills necessary to design and perform scientific investigations, calculate the rate of weathering for different rock types, explore how soils interact with water, determine the composition of locally collected soil samples, and explain how the properties of soil influence erosion. Using the Tracking Endangered Species kit, students learn about endangered species, set up a MicroAqarium, and observe changes. With the Understanding Climate Change kit, students explore the issues surrounding climate change and develop solutions. Supplies like metal scoops, chemicals, and containers are needed to use these kits successfully.

These kits have positive effects on my students' mental health.

Students gain a sense of accomplishment and purpose as they consider environmental issues that impact them. Problem-solving real-world issues can give students a sense of empowerment. Others will be fulfilled as they see the real-world applications of what they are learning. Students will collaborate with others, building essential social skills and creating important connections. Engaging in active, hands-on learning activities can reduce academic anxiety and improve resilience. Students who see the results of their work and understand their role in broader environmental contexts may feel more confident in their abilities to tackle challenges. Overall, these activities enhance scientific knowledge and promote a sense of responsibility, community connection, and personal achievement.
