Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Pretending is one important way that young children learn about the world around them. I teach kindergarten in San Jose, California. Most of the school receives free or reduce lunch. Last year 17 of my 20 students spoke a language other than English. I try to provide every opportunity for my students to learn life skills and how to become successful members of their communities. I would like for my young students to have the joy of dressing up and pretending to be someone that they might want to become one day. I want to provide an opportunity for them to develop a sense of self. I know these experiences will help develop social and language skills while the students are actively engaged in creative play in a dramatic play center. I would like to start a dramatic play center with 5 career costumes from Lakeshore. Kindergartners love to dress-up and pretend; this is one way they can make sense of the world and learn about their community. During center time, students have the chance to participate in different activities in the classroom. At a dramatic play center the students would be able to dress up and pretend to be someone else. Hopefully this will inspire some future policemen and teachers as well as develop vocabulary. These career costumes would be used this school year for my 20 kindergarten students, as well as my partner teacher's 20 students. I want our students to have these experiences to help identify with different people in the community. Hopefully this play with help inspire them to become successful members of their community as they grow.
