Although our school is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, about 50% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged, about 25% are English language learners, and about 50% qualify for free and reduced price lunches. Less than 50% of the parents have had some college or graduated from college.
Our students come from varied backgrounds which celebrate different holidays and events.
By allowing students to share their personal experiences with one another, we can grow as a community in understanding, appreciation, and inclusion.
My Project
In the United States, the school calendar is often set around different holidays that have great historical, cultural, or religious significance. Our students come from many backgrounds that also celebrate holidays of great importance to their culture and personal identity.
This project will give the students the skills to create a STEM based greeting card for an event of their choice which will hopefully allow them to share with their peers a part of their life experience.
By giving students an opportunity to share informally about their backgrounds, they may feel more included and accepted by their peers. With increased understanding among students, perhaps greater community develops.
After learning about thenbasic components of a circuit, the students will use the LED Lights, batteries, and copper tape to design a greeting card for an event specific to their background.
