My Project
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my Donors Choose page. This is a passion project for me. As a teacher and person, I place great value in a good photography. But what I value more are my students. I teach ELD in the newcomer center at my school. My students migrate from all over the world. I have student from Ukraine, Honduras, Venezuela, Eritrea, Cambodia, Taiwan, Mexico, and many more. They come with a great deal of difficulty and often a great deal of trauma. As their teacher, I strive to instill in them a sense of belonging and a sense of personal value. One way I do this is through photography. I believe that a great portrait shows everyone's value and everyone deserves a great portrait of themselves.
Students deserve and are honored by professional senior pictures.
Two years ago I started placing small polaroid pictures on students on a world map on my wall. I noticed immediately how much the students loved the pictures and how much pride they felt about having a picture of themselves next to their country. So I then started volunteering to take senior pictures of the students in the newcomer center. Last year we had such a beautiful experience with the students. They made appointments after school to come in and get their portraits taken. One student sent her senior picture to her mother in Mexico. She told me her mother cried with pride and printed a huge copy of one of the photos for a graduation party they would throw when she returned to Mexico.
This year, a few teachers and myself are trying to grow this experience for the students. We took it upon ourselves to get better tools to take professional photos for these beautiful people.
