This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our middle school is a high-needs school. More than 95% of our students come from low-income households. Many of our families are also experiencing housing instability due to a lack of affordable housing. Families are living in recreational vehicles, staying in motels, or sharing housing with extended family members or friends.

With your help, we can purchase a basic winter hygiene necessities such as lip balm, lotion, kleenex, and jackets and sweaters for them this winter so they can focus on learning.

Now more than ever, the financial impact of COVID is evident as our students enter our building each morning.

Students are more anxious than before COVID, in part due to family stressors. Everyday we hear our students talk about how they don’t know if mom/dad/grandparent will be able to afford relatively basic items that are needed until they get their paychecks and pay the rent, electricity, etc.

In addition to the hunger, stress, and difficulty with being mentally available for learning seen daily, research shows a lasting long-term effect of these deficits, especially with younger children. Our students from low-income homes are at a much higher risk of falling behind during critical development periods and are less likely to be able to catch up academically and/or emotionally. Your support in helping us meet our student's basic needs would be greatly appreciated.
