Gifted students and problem solving go hand-in-hand (literally in this case). My GATE (gifted) students are craving additional opportunities to practice using their keen sense of observation, memory, and ability to solve problems. My students can't wait to try, fail, and look at the situation in a new way.
Most people presume that since a child is gifted, they excel in all areas.
However, most gifted students need additional experiences to nourish their abilities and participate in collaborative activities with their peers.
My gifted students represent a very diverse population. This project would impact approximately 24 students in 5th grade.
My Project
My students have been inspired by a once 11 year old boy who created an arcade in his dad's auto parts store entirely made from cardboard. Students will experience the engineering design process as they plan, build, test, and change their arcade games.
Students will have to put their creative and critical thinking skills to the test using these materials in a project based learning unit.
My students will be researching arcade games, creating detailed blue prints, and constructing an arcade game made with these tools and some upcycled cardboard. When the arcade is complete, students will share it with the school in a day of arcade play.
Since these tools are reusable, we'll put them to work year after year creating other fun and engaging projects.
