Capturing Students' Point of Views Through Digital Storytelling

Help me give my students DSLR cameras to use to capture photojournalism, artistic imagery, and culture from their point of view.

My Students

My students are creative, diverse, artistic individuals that enjoy art-making and photography. My class consists of many different socio-economic backgrounds and gender identities. They love working learning new techniques and are excited to see what they end up producing. My students have recently been focusing on creating political artwork to hone their self-expression skills.

My Project

As of right now, we have ten cameras to share between Yearbook (not my class) and my digital photography classes. Because I have many students from different socioeconomic backgrounds, there are students that do not have proper cameras (digital or cellphones) to use for class assignments. My students get discouraged when they are not able to take adequate photos for their assignments when they have magnificent ideas.

More digital cameras in my classroom will help bridge the gap by allowing them to use technology that professionals use in the real world.

Students will be able to capture images of what is important in their lives with the school, social media, and their peers. Additionally, when we return to learning in person, my students will be able to collaborate effectively in small groups. This will not only enhance their collaborative skills, but their language arts and technology use skills will improve with the ability to tell stories from their point of view.
