I teach in a Title I school, where our students receive free breakfast and lunch every day. Our students come to school with various needs and often crave the nurturing environment our teachers provide our students. With decreased funding every year, our teachers are expected to do more with less, and we find ourselves having to think outside of the box to meet the demands of the state.
Our students all have different needs, so it is our job to find a variety of ways to meet those needs!
It may be through hands-on activities, games, or the use of technology. I want to continue to create a learning environment in my classroom where students are excited to be there and are engaged.
My Project
This project is all about building our classroom library. Several of the books in this project are for teacher read alouds during our morning meetings as well as whole group reading lessons. We are continuously building our classroom community during morning meetings. Some of the chosen books will be used to during morning meetings and lead into discussions about accepting differences, kindness, and other powerful social emotional learning topics. Other books have been chosen because they provide rich literature to teach various reading standards during our whole group reading lessons.
If you want to get children to fall in love with books, you have to get high interest books in their hands!
I have selected a variety of books that have been high interest for my students and also have diverse characters and topics. Some of these books are often checked out from our school library so having these books in our own classroom library will allow for more of my students to get the opportunity to read some of these popular titles. I think it is also important that a classroom library include books that have characters that they can relate to. Representation matters when it comes to books!
