Imagine walking through the forest and finding an image you want to capture with your digital camera. You zoom in and snap the photo. Unfortunately, once you download the photo on your laptop, you realize that even though you tried to hold still while taking the picture, the image is blurry.
My 4th grade students attend a public school in rural Washington State.
Our school believes in rigorous learning for all students. We provide our students opportunities to think critically and create high quality projects to share beyond the school walls. My students are enthusiastic and enjoy working on long term projects, especially ones involving technology.
My Project
Our fourth grade classes share a classroom set of digital cameras and a photo printer. With the addition of tripods the quality of our photography will improve. Our school has developed a strong standards-based curriculum that blends science and social studies with reading and writing. One project I have planned for my students is to document evidence of a healthy forest ecosystem while on fieldwork. Capturing close-ups of animal tracks, shrubs, leaves, insects, and other living things will help us in our research documentation. The use of a tripod with flexible arms will help us produce a quality product. Students will also be able to place themselves in the photo with the use of a tripod and the self-timer mode on the camera. Students will use iPhoto to manage and edit their photographs before printing on our inkjet photo printer. Our pictures will be displayed not only at our school, but at various places in our community.
Infusing technology into daily routines broadens educational experiences and opportunities for students.
Please help my students improve their photography skills by providing the tools needed to compliment our digital cameras. You may inspire the next Ansel Adams!
