Capturing my Students' Love of Learning Through Technology

Help me give my students Amazon Fire 10 tablets. I teach students with Down Syndrome, Autism and other disabilities in a functional classroom setting. They would benefit from more technology in the classroom.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Robinson's classroom raised $779

My Project

My students are a fun and lively bunch. They love to learn and are determined to not let their challenges stand in the way of succeeding at their goals. I'm so proud of the progress that they have made and the kindness that they show to their classmates and teachers. As proud as I am of them, I know they can achieve more. I want them to be able to excel in our tech-rich environment.

Tablets increase learner engagement and with support from the teacher, can emulate natural social interaction (something my students struggle with) and interactivity.

They can also offer problem-solving activities; as well as set achievable goals and provide instant feedback.

These tablets will allow me to bring the real world into the classroom at the tap of a screen. I can provide my students with authentic materials via level-and-age-appropriate videos and real-life communication. Most of my students have varying levels of communication needs and some are non-verbal. Increasing opportunities for them to hear language is vital to their developmental success. This can be accomplished through interaction with other teachers and learners through Skype or by using a secure app such as Stars private messaging.

Tablets also promote learner autonomy. It's my intention that my students become as independent as they are capable of being. Tablets are easy to use and this will allow me to take a step back and let my students work at their own pace, being on stand-by as a facilitator when students require help or a little push in the right direction.

Finally, tablets will allow me to connect with my students outside the classroom. I can send links to classwork and feedback to their families, which will help to foster a positive relationship and foment a greater interest in their child's education.
