Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an urban high school in Springfield, MA. 100% of students receive free meals. Our school is culturally diverse and about 25% students speak English as their second language. My students spend their lives surrounded by concrete and buildings. In my science classroom, I encourage students to explore the world and learn from it. I strive to focus my curriculum on current global issues, teaching my students how to apply the curriculum they are learning to become productive global citizens.
My Project
I am traveling to Antarctica with a research team studying Weddell Seals as teacher professional development.
My goal is to capture my expedition through pictures and videos, developing curricula where students and teachers around the world can explore Antarctica and learn from its unique environment.
Due to Antarctica's extreme weather many cameras will not function properly, but Garmin's VIRB 360 and the GoPro Hero 6 are specifically designed to handle Antarctica's rugged conditions.
The Garmin VIRB 360 camera records 360-degree videos and pictures, students will be able to use VR headsets to explore Antarctica like they are there. The camera auto-stiches both videos and pictures meaning no editing processes and images can be instantly shared. The camera also has built in sensors to measure speed, atmospheric pressure, GPS and compass, data that will be used to develop lessons. This specific camera can also be controlled by remote or voice, meaning I can start and stop recording while continuously working with scientists in the field.
The GoPro Hero 6 to capture non-360 images and videos. This specific GoPro has been rated the best color accuracy which will be beneficial in the land of ice and dim skies during the season I will be there. My specific goal for the GoPro Hero 6 is to easily have a camera mounted to my body and take images and videos at any moment. Being up close and hands free while working with seals and scientist, being able to capture the moment with a simple voice command, a feature of this model camera.
I have requested additional batteries and specific SD cards, because few SD cards will record properly, and battery life drains quickly at low temperatures.
Please help me document my Antarctica professional development and share it with students and teachers around the world.
