Capturing Moments of Mindfulness: Empowering Mentorship and Inclusion
I am honored to work with an incredible group of students in our Access program for students with autism and our dedicated Student mentors.
My students are extraordinary—each one unique, resilient, and full of potential. They inspire me daily with their determination to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Our project focuses on cultivating mindfulness, an essential skill that helps students manage stress, build focus, and develop emotional regulation. Through this initiative, we aim to create an inclusive environment where Access students and their mentors collaborate to capture meaningful moments of mindfulness through photography, journaling, and guided reflection activities.
The resources we’re requesting—mindfulness journals, instant cameras, and sensory tools—will provide hands-on opportunities for students to learn and practice mindfulness strategies. Journals will allow students to document their reflections, promoting self-expression and emotional growth. Instant cameras will help them capture calming, inspiring images from their environment, fostering creativity and encouraging them to see the beauty around them. Sensory tools will support self-regulation, making mindfulness practices more accessible for our students with autism.
The goal of this project is twofold: to teach students mindfulness techniques they can use throughout their lives and to build meaningful connections between mentors and mentees. By working together, both groups will enhance their social-emotional skills, develop empathy, and gain a deeper understanding of one another.
What makes my students special is their willingness to embrace challenges and grow through new experiences. This project will create an environment where their unique strengths shine while fostering collaboration and inclusion. With your support, we can make mindfulness an integral part of their educational journey and empower them to succeed, not just in the classroom but beyond.
