My Project

My students are resilient, curious, and full of potential. Living in a remote village in rural Alaska, they face challenges that many others don’t—limited access to educational resources, extreme weather, and restricted internet connectivity. Despite this, they show up every day eager to learn, especially when math connects to real life.

We are requesting a digital camera to help bring math to life in our classroom.

In our rural setting, abstract math concepts can feel disconnected from everyday experience. This camera will allow students to document their world—measuring and analyzing local landmarks, tracking geometric shapes in nature, and capturing the math behind traditional activities like fishing, hunting, and beading.

We’ll use photos and videos to:

*Create student-led math tutorials and presentations

*Build real-world math journals combining images with problem-solving

*Record hands-on projects like scale models and graphing activities

*Encourage visual thinking and engagement for students who struggle with textbook learning

A camera will turn our math lessons into an interactive, student-centered experience. Students will be able to see and capture math in their environment, which builds stronger connections and deeper understanding. It will also help us share our learning journey with families and the broader community, bridging the gap created by geographic isolation.

This project will empower students to become both creators and explorers—developing math skills while building confidence and pride in their work.
