My Students

“I pledge allegiance to the science alliance, And swear to promote science compliance, To battle the world's science defiance, In order to decrease our world's reliance, On greenhouse gases #science” 2015 Junior class, Climate Warrior Pledge written for the project this year

My students are diverse in every way.

They are curious, brave, bold, shy, and smart. They are learning to question the world around them and their place in it. Our school fosters individuality and this project supports that well. My hope is that all of my students learn that chemistry is foundational in their lives, it is important and it matters (pun intended).

My Project

The Air Up There: What's in the air and why does it matter? Each Fall my junior chemistry students work to answer these two important questions. Using climate change as our case study, we deeply investigate the gases in the atmosphere that are having a negative impact on our planet. Gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and even water vapor are researched by pairs of students. These pairs personify their gas as a villain. Then the pair creates a news script with advice from a professional reporter, as if they were out in the field reporting on their gas. They record their script using a green screen to allow them to appear like they are on site, in the field. Each class of 12 videos are put together into an episode of the “Cougar Chronicles”. All four of my classes go to a local elementary school and present their video, work with the students to take notes and understand the information and culminate in a recitation of a student written, Climate Warrior Pledge.

Currently, students prop their tablets on boxes and books--makeshift stands at best.

If they are suppose to be acting as professional news reporters, they should have some better technical equipment to help in the process. These iPad stands will allow the students to better film their pieces.
