Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has a high percentage of Title I students. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students must rise to the occasion daily to be strong, mature, and responsible even though their home life may be less than ideal. We also have a large population of moderate/severe special needs students. These students are included in all areas of our school and are a vital part of our population. All of our students, regardless of their needs, are ready to infuse their learning with energy and purpose. Our students are curious, creative, and collaborative critical thinkers who are eager to understand the world around them and apply their learning in authentic and innovative ways.
My Project
Our students are ready to take their learning to the next level. A place where they can collaborate and bring their ideas to life, a MakerSpace, is exactly what they need to infuse their schooling experience with creative energy and purpose. Our MakerSpace will be known as the "Bulldog Brain Zone."
The "Bulldog Brain Zone" will have spaces that inspire curiosity and creativity--brightly colored walls and furniture will excite the senses.
It will also be equipped with materials that empower students to productively and collaboratively engage in critical thinking, problem-solving, and engineering work. Our vision is to create a variety of stations throughout the room with different types of activities and materials to excite and equip learners of every age, interest, and academic level. We plan to set up a coding station equipped with iPads and OSMO Genius Kits to help our younger students learn the basics of coding. This will help lay the foundation for the more advanced coding and robotics. Other stations will be for crafting and constructing, and students will have access to a variety of materials such as wooden sticks, cardboard, tape, and glue as they design projects to learn about mechanical principles and solve authentic problems. There will also be electronics and videography stations.
Through their diverse learning experiences in the "Bulldog Brain Zone" students will start becoming the innovators of the future as they develop a stronger command of the NGSS standards and engineering practices.
Our vision is to lay a strong foundation for students to be excited about and ready for the 21st century world of work. We also strive to inspire students to care about their world and fill them with a desire to give life to ideas that will have a positive impact on the lives of others.
