My Project
I am teaching a yearbook class at my high school for the first time in over a decade. The purpose of this course is to ensure the students have ownership over the yearbook publication; teaching them valuable photography, interview, and documenting skills.
By offering a yearbook class, students will have the opportunity to control the photos, stories, and representation that will go into the book for students to cherish in the future.
As a Social Studies teacher, I am focused on supporting my students with the skill set of documenting events and recording them for current and future generations to look back at the yearbook publications with the ability to get a real feeling of the community, achievements, and events that occurred within that school year. The goal is for the students to become story-tellers using visual representation as well as learning how to create small features to capture the precious memories.
We are a small, Title I, K-12 Hmong Culture and Language charter school that produces 2 yearbooks a year. One yearbook for K-5 and the other yearbook that is for 6th - 12th grade. In past years, our yearbooks are much more like photo albums, as they are missing key details such as captions, stories, and student voice. We are hoping to provide our students with the resources, support, and lessons to create a yearbook that tells the story of the school's community.
