I am a third grade teacher in Brooklyn, New York. This school is a Title I school located in a lower socio-economic community where 93% of the children receive free breakfast and lunch everyday. Many of these children are English Language Learners and their parents are immigrants who do not speak English. During my seven years of teaching it has been my experience that children are interested and amazed by science. Unfortunately we have very limited materials with which to teach. Science can be very difficult to understand and teach without the proper materials. We have some science textbooks, but they are very difficult for the children to read and understand. If I could provide them with some additional materials, I believe the children would be much more motivated and excited when it is science time. Every year I teach the children about the different ecosystems of the Earth. The children enjoy learning about places such as the rainforest, the desert and the ocean, and the many animals and plants that live in these places. It would be wonderful if I could bring these places to life for them through video. It would increase their understanding and capture their attention. Having information in visual form, through videos would also make learning science easier for English Language Learners. Lakeshore Learning has a wonderful selection of Eyewitness Videos on all of the areas we study. We could start a video library in our classroom and they would be put to very good use.
