Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My two other colleagues and I have been blessed with a wonderful group of students grades 9-11. The students are enthusiastic learners who need to improve their literacy. What better way to motivate them than to provide their novels based on issues relevant to urban students of their age group. Our students have diverse needs and they read at different reading levels. The books would help struggling and reluctant readers to grow their literary skills. We would like to begin a library with a collection of high and low books with compelling, rich stories with inspiring characters. The students are between the ages of 14-22 years old and are from an urban environment also and will benefit from these books that teach social lessons.

My students have great aspirations to be productive citizens in society.

Some would like to be security officers, police officers, nurses, artists, mechanics, and teachers. Help them grow in literacy by providing increased reading opportunities.

My Project

The Bluford series will keep my students more interested in reading. The social issues that students face at Bluford high are very similar to those of my students and their peers. The social lessons taught in this series will help them understand their society and the problems faced by many other teenagers. By creating a library of high and low books, each child will have the opportunity to find a diversity of levels that will be inclusive of all. Students will not only dissect themes but read in teams for fun. It offers the students a chance to read, discuss, compare, make predictions, analyze characters, draw conclusions and make inferences. There is also much to write about from environmental and personal experiences that relate to the novel.
