My Students
My students are from the most diverse borough of New York City, Queens. Because of this, our population is made up of many English language learners. My classroom is comprised of mostly students of Asian decent and Hispanic decent. Our school receives Title I funding to help support the needs of our students. The funding is allotted towards cultural programs and educating our students on the importance of fitness and nutrition.
Most of my students come from hardworking immigrant families.
Therefore, their parents spend a significant amount of time away from home. Unfortunately, my students do not get to spend a lot of quality time with their parents. They really look forward to coming to school and spending time with their teachers and peers.
Come September, my students enter their final year in our school. They take the state tests for the first time and experience much more demanding and rigorous work. We constantly have to remind ourselves that even though they are the "big kids", they are still 8 year old children who need nurturing in a world that expects them to grow up way too fast.
My Project
This year, our third grade classes want to fill our classrooms with the moments, memories and beauty from our own students. We want to do away with using clipart and stock photos for our bulletins and charts. We want to use our own students' faces and have them see themselves more in the classroom.
Our classrooms need to mirror the community that exists within them.
It is incredibly important for students, especially at a young age, to develop self awareness and a healthy self esteem. Photography also adds to the overall feeling of home, which is what we want our students to view school as. Some of our students spend more waking hours at school than they do at home and we want them to see how we value them. Our students are unique and thoughtful individuals and they need and should see themselves reflected on the walls of our classrooms!
