Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For the last three years, students from all grades have been asking me to restart the tradition of directing a yearly school musical. This was a tradition we had at our campus before the COVID-19 pandemic and its multiple variants prevented us from gathering in such large numbers. The new curriculum our District funded (musicplayonline), abides numerous musicals on the platform that allows us the perform, film, and distribute the shows.
By giving us a camera, you’ll be giving students irreplaceable access and hands on experience with the moments that matter the most: their own shows and concerts.
Students are building their own sets and costumes, and students can be hands on with the camera to document the process. Students are also going to advertise the show through commercials, announcements, and interviews with the cast and crew. This will give them more self efficacy to have a real, professional hands on camera to document the experience. We’ll be able to record and live stream our musical in high quality rather than a blurry iPhone camera. We’ll also be able to distribute it to our community in a way that won’t cost our families any extra money, so students will be able to keep high quality memories that will last forever at no cost to them. Beyond the musical tradition, we’ll also be able to document over 60 students’ experiences in choir as we give about 5 performances a year for our hundreds of people. We’ll also be able to film and photograph our grade level concerts that we put on each year. In total, hours and hours of performance, music, art production, and behind the scenes student content can be filmed and shared with our community through the years by giving us the opportunity to have a camera.
