Help me give my students the opportunity to read non-fiction books on their level and books to choose during our Revolutionary Figures unit in 7th grade and our Justice After WW II unit in 8th grade.
My school is a small school with only one to two classes per grade level. My 7th grade homeroom students will spend 3 hours in our room every day and my other classes of 7th and 8th grade will be with me for 90 minutes! This means my Literature classroom will be a home away from home for students. I want to be sure the room is comfortable, colorful and welcoming to each of the diverse individuals coming in every day.
My Project
During second quarter, our 7th grade students will embark on their study of non-fiction reading and argumentative writing. Their study will culminate in a "Night of the Notables" and Argumentative Essay. During this night and in their essay, they will have to BECOME the revolutionary figure they've been studying and speak to their parents and visitors. The non-fiction books, focused on activism, will be essential to this study, as will giving students choices that are on their level.
While our 7th graders study revolutionary figures, our 8th graders will embark on a study of WWII in both ELA and Social Studies.
As a part of this study, we'd like them to write a Position Paper on a topic that matters to the world today. In order to deepen their study of non-fiction and to ensure our work is cross-curricular, we'd love to give our 8th graders the opportunity to read non-fiction accounts of WWII. These books will not only provide them with choices, but it will allow us to meet the needs of our wide range of readers. Thanks for helping to making our study of nonfiction exciting!
